Teaching Your Dog Its Name
Once you’ve selected some names, you can narrow down your list by saying the names out loud and seeing if any stand out as the better option (as well as something you don’t mind shouting around the neighborhood when needed).
Then it’s time to teach your new name to your dog. Simply follow these steps below or watch the video to learn how.
- Get some small treats. You might need to hide these in your pockets or carry them around for awhile so your dog isn’t distracted.
- Say your dog’s new name to them and when they respond by looking at you give them a treat.
- Continue doing this exercise through out the day and over the next week or two.
- Eventually, your dog will respond to the name without needing a treat.
- Make sure to only use your dog’s name in a positive way, not when your upset at them.
