How Do You Pick The Right Name?

How do you know if you’ve picked the right name for your dog? That’s a question new pup parents ask every day.

We’ve been helping dog owners find the perfect pet name for years now, and along the way we’ve picked up a few tips. Here is our advice for selecting the right name:

  • Is it easy to say? Some names are great in theory but tough to pronounce in everyday life. Before you lock in on a name, make sure it rolls off the tongue.
  • Say it out loud. And repeat it several times. Can you imagine loudly calling for your dog with this name? If the answer is no, then it’s not the right name. Move on and find a better option.
  • Does it fit your dog? This is important. Check to see if the name matches your dog’s personality and appearance. A name might work well in theory but just not be right for your dog.
  • And finally, trust your gut. When you find the right name, you’ll know it!

I came out of the dog pound with a little female puppy and on the radio was Age of Aquarius. I knew right away that this little puppy was going to be named “Dawn” Aquarius. This little girl was diagnosed with distemper, a fatal dog disease a couple of weeks later. When I was told by the Vet this horrible news, I asked for a few more days. “Can you give her a shot or pills for now and I’ll come back on Saturday?” The doctor did both. I left and went to another vet only to get the very same diagnosis. I asked this Vet exactly what I asked the first and he gave her a shot and the same pills and told me that I must come back. Long story short, Dawn live a very happy 18 years. The double medication and shots blackened her teeth for life, but that didn’t stop her from being such a smart and very sweet girl. “It is the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius 🎶”
