When you have an extra large pup, sometimes you need a larger than life name to correspond with their size. Big dog names signal your dog isn’t of average stature. Your pooch is large and proud of it.
So what exactly is considered a large dog? Similar to shopping for clothes, sizes vary depending on the source. In general, however, a large dog is greater than 60 pounds, has a 24” chest or larger, and the length of its back is 17” plus. Popular breeds include the Labrador Retriever, Boxer, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Collie, German Shorthaired Pointer, Rottweiler and Sheepdog. Big dog names are perfect for these breeds!
Amazingly, these dogs are considered “small” in comparison to even larger breeds. If you’re living situation allows it, there are a number of extra large breeds weighing in at over 100 pounds that make great pets. Examples: the St. Bernard, Great Dane, Bullmastiff, Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees and Irish Wolfhound. Don’t be fooled by their strong stature – these dogs are really gentle giants at heart!
One word of caution, however. Large dogs already have an intimating appearance due to their size, so big dog names might only add to the trepidation for some people. On the other hand, many big dog names celebrate the “gentle giant” side of have a larger pooch. So do what you feel is right for your dog!
