Random Fun Facts About Yorkies

Before we go, we have to share the five random facts about Yorkshire Terriers that we discovered while researching Yorkie names. We bet you didn’t know all these crazy cool tidbits!

  1. The Yorkie was originally bred to be an exterminator in the mid-1800s. They were used to hunt rats in clothing mills and mines and also for hunting badgers and foxes underground.
  2. The Yorkshire Terrier traces its heritage to the Waterside Terrier, a breed brought to Yorkshire by weavers who migrated from Scotland to England in the mid-19th century.
  3. The Yorkie made its debut at a bench show in England in 1861 as a “Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier.”
  4. The “Father” of all Yorkies is thought to be a champion show dog named Huddersfield Ben. He only lived six years, but in that time he won over 70 prizes and sired many puppies.
  5. The Yorkie is currently the 9th most popular dog breed in the United States.

I started with Oliver Lendell and Gypsy Doodlebug. Both rescues and supposed to have been fixed. They had one litter of 6 puppies. We kept 3. Our are Lucy Angelica (From Peanuts and The Rugrats), Frodo Baggins (LOTR), and Mozart Wolfgang (He’s always been a very vocal little guy.) Yes, all of my dogs have middle names. So does the cat, Bellatrix Narcissa (I don’t recommend this combination…..she’s “difficult.”.)

The three puppies that left here went to close friends. They are Mia Louise, Georgialynn Lilly, Baxter Bodumplin. Their new families wanted them to have middle names like their siblings. They all have tails, love to swim, and they all like arts and crafts (ripping up paper towels and tissues!)

Everyone has now been fixed (even The Cat!)
