Weighing in at only 9-16 pounds, the Shih Tzu is a petite pup with a small appetite. According to experts, Shih Tzu puppies only need 1/2 to 3/4 cup of food a day. That increases to 1 to 1 1/2 cup when they’re an adult.
On average, quality dog food is about $2-3 per pound. Say you get a 30-pound bag for $55. That’s approximately 120 cups of dog food. If an adult Shih Tzu eats 1 1/2 cups per day, that means the 30-pound bag would provide 80 days of food. So that’s almost three months of food for only $55.

How Much Are Vet Expenses?

A shih tzu grooming does not cost on average $20. Minimum $20 and that’s from some lady at home with kitchen scissors and a men’s beard trimmer… that is so frustrated to read as a groomer. This is the first thing that pops up on the google search for how much it costs to groom a shih tzu and so many pet owners are going to be mislead into thinking they can afford it when they can’t. It’s also going to be very frustrating for groomers when a new client comes in and says “I read on google it should be $20 on average”. $40-$60 on average is more accurate. Minimum $30 at a salon for just a bath, blowout and brush.
How did you come up with the Average cost to groom a Shih Tzu being$20.00? On the very low end $40 … good up to $70 for a full groom with ear plucking, cleaning, bath, condoning, brush out & blow dry, hair cut & dremel nails.
$20 is a mini face trim & nails at most.

I was wondering if you can help me out with something please. I’ve had my dog now for 1 and a half years now. Would she still be considered a puppy and what is the usual price for selling them at that age?
It’s generally considered a puppy up to about two years. You could check out petfinder.com or a classifieds site and see if there are similar aged dogs on there in your area. It’ll probably depend if you find someone who sees getting through some of the more difficult puppy stage as an advantage vs getting their dog directly from the breeder.
