Why do dogs love KONGs?
Why do dogs love KONG so much?
For hundreds, even thousands, of years, dogs had to hunt and scavenge for their food. It wasn’t delivered in a bowl like it is today. The KONG toy uses this instinct while keeping your dog entertained and mentally stimulated.
We give our dog Toby a KONG with peanut butter and a treat about every other night. Of course, he would love anything we gave him – he is a Labrador! – but I’ve been inspired to try new delicious and nutritious ideas.
Tips for filling a KONG
You can put anything in a KONG, but we have a few tips and tricks to make it stick in there and not create a total mess.
1. Start with a base
A thick, creamy base like peanut butter or cream cheese is recommended to keep everything contained. You can add yummy, crunchy bites such as dry dog food or raw pet-approved vegetables from there.
2. Seal the end
If you pick something that’s a little more liquidy, like applesauce or baby food, seal the small bottom hole of the KONG so the contents don’t drip out.
3. Freeze it
One last tip: Pop it in the fridge for a few hours to make the treat last. This results in a frozen treat that creates a challenge for your pup. Which, of course, equals more “me time” for you!
