We give our dog Toby a KONG with peanut butter and a treat about every other night. He would love anything we gave him – he is a Labrador after all! – but I’ve been inspired to try out new delicious and nutritious ideas.

Yes, peanut butter is always a go-to favorite, but we have 40+ other KONG fillings your dog will love.

Tips for filling a KONG

Why do dogs love the KONG so much?

For hundreds, even thousands, of years, dogs had to hunt and scavenge for their food. It wasn’t delivered in a bowl like it is today.

The KONG toy plays to this instinct all while keeping your dog entertained and mentally stimulated.

You can put anything in a KONG, but to make it really stick in there and not create a total mess, we’ve got a few tips and tricks.

Start with a base

A thick, creamy base like peanut butter or cream cheese is recommended to keep everything contained. From there, you can add in yummy, crunchy bites such as dry dog food or raw pet-approved vegetables.

If you do pick something that’s a little more liquidy, like applesauce or baby food, be sure to seal the small bottom hole of the KONG so the contents don’t drip out.

One last tip: To make the treat really last, pop it in the fridge for a few hours. This results in a frozen treat that creates an added challenge for your pup. Which of course equals more “me time” for you!

Human foods your dog will devour

There are many human foods that make excellent fillings for your dog’s KONG. You may even have some of these in your kitchen right now.

  • Peanut butter
  • Banana
  • Bread
  • Apple slices (without the core or seeds)
  • Cheese cubes
  • Cheese Whiz
  • Honey (in moderation)
  • Canned pumpkin
  • Squash
  • Sweet potato
  • Watermelon (seedless)
  • Broth
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Beef jerky
  • Cooked hot dog
  • Lunch meat
  • Tuna
  • Rice
  • Chopped broccoli
  • Carrot sticks
  • Yogurt
  • Ground beef or turkey
  • Shredded chicken
  • Cheerios
  • Crackers
  • Baby food
  • Cream cheese
  • Refried beans
  • Applesauce
  • Your leftover dinner (as long as it’s pet safe!)

Treats designed for dogs

Of course, we can’t forget all the pet products out there. Some are even perfectly designed to fit inside the KONG!

  • Treats
  • Dry dog food
  • Wet dog food
  • KONG Stuff’n Easy Treat (available in flavors like bacon and cheese, pepperoni, sweet potato and more)

  • KONG Stuff’n Ziggies

  • KONG Stuff’n Snacks

Fun combinations canines will love

Certain combinations of foods create an irresistible delight your dog will devour. Here are our favorites:

  • Peanut butter plus dry dog food or treats – a classic combination!
  • Cream cheese plus lunch meat for a savory snack
  • Peanut butter plus apple slices or carrot sticks for an added crunch
  • Rolled up bread with a cheese cube inside
  • A dog treat on the bottom (to block the hole) and broth filling the rest of the KONG, frozen until hard

I’d love to hear from fellow pup parents! What do you put in your dog’s KONG? Any tips or tricks?

Peanut butter containing xiloti is poisonous to dogs. Natural pb should not contain xilotol
