Many of us dog parents have taught our pups how to sit, shake and lie down. You know, the basics. I think we all would love if our dogs could do a few extra tricks, but the thought of spending hours going through this over and over again seems exhausting. At least it does to me!

Believe it or not, however, teaching your dog a super cool new trick doesn’t have to take that long. In fact, I’ve found five that take five minutes or less!

Sure, practice makes perfect, but five minutes is all you need to get your dog going with an awesome trick.

Check out the awesome tutorials below and see what you think.

High Five

If your dog knows how to shake, this is an easy one to add to their repertoire of tricks. All you have to do is switch up your hand position, and your dog will catch on easily.

Don’t sweat it if your dog doesn’t know how to shake yet. That’s an easy one to teach them, and you can tack on the high five right afterward.

Dance

This is such a fun trick to teach a little dog. It’ll be more challenging for medium-sized dogs and probably not possible for the big guys (there’s no way my 110-lb Yellow Lab could pull this off). But for the tiny tots, it’s a hoot.

Teaching your dog to be a dancing queen (or dancing king) is actually easier than you’d think. Sure, it’ll take practice, but getting them going is pretty straightforward. Watch the video and see!

Peek-A-Boo

I just love the idea of playing peek-a-boo with your pup. Not only is it adorable, it’s also a great way to bond with your dog and build trust.

To get started, you’ll have to arm yourself with a handful of treats and a dog-training clicker for positive reinforcement. There are a couple of different steps, so letting your dog know they’re doing it right along the way is key.

After that, practice makes perfect, and you get to enjoy a little bonding time during this process.

Open A Door

How impressed will your friends be to see your dog run to open the door?

This trick does require the extra step of tying a rope toy to a door (you didn’t think your dog could magically grasp a door handle, did you?), but it’s a quick and easy thing to do beforehand.

We can’t wait to see the look on your friends’ faces when your dog performs this trick!

Fetch Me a Drink

This is definitely the most practical trick on the list. Who hasn’t been super comfy on the couch and yet wanted a cold beverage without having to get up? With this trick, you can enlist your dog’s help!

For more fun dog tricks, I recommend checking out the book, “101 Dog Tricks: Step-by-Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog.” My husband bought the book and is having a ball working on these with our dog, Toby.

To this day, we still pull out this book every so often and find a new trick to share with Toby. It's fun and so good for his physical and mental health.
