Rottweiler Names

With their intelligence, endurance and physical abilities, it’s no wonder that in addition to being a loyal pet, the Rottweiler also makes a great police dog, herder, therapy pet or service dog.

A Remarkable History

Amazingly, their history may be traced back to the Roman Empire. It is believed that the breed descended from one of the drover dogs indigenous to ancient Rome. This mastiff-type dog was dependable and rugged with great intelligence and guarding instincts. Sound familiar?

Around A.D. 74, the Roman army traveled across the Alps into what is now southern Germany. A town in this region was eventually given the name Rottweil, and it was home to the dog breed we now call the Rottweiler.

Inspired by their strong, sturdy physique, high intelligence and German heritage, we’ve rounded up 150+ Rottweiler names to check out.

Male German Rottweiler Names

As we mentioned before, the Rottweiler traces the majority of its history to Germany. In the Middle Ages, traveling butchers used the breed to guard money pouches around their necks. The dogs were eventually known as Rottweiler Metzgerhunds, or “butcher dogs.”

When the railroad became the primary source for moving goods, people no longer had a need for the Rottweiler, and the population sharply declined.

Soon, however, the breed would see a revival with the First and Second World Wars. As a smart, working dog, the Rottweiler was put to work in various roles, including as a messenger, ambulance, draught, and guard dog.

With their history firmly embedded in the German culture, we had to include German dog names on the list. Not only do these names pay tribute to your dog’s heritage, but they’re also unique, cultured, and fun.
