Why do dogs love KONGs?

Why do dogs love KONG so much?

For hundreds, even thousands, of years, dogs had to hunt and scavenge for their food. It wasn’t delivered in a bowl like it is today. The KONG toy uses this instinct while keeping your dog entertained and mentally stimulated.

We give our dog Toby a KONG with peanut butter and a treat about every other night. Of course, he would love anything we gave him – he is a Labrador! – but I’ve been inspired to try new delicious and nutritious ideas.

Tips for filling a KONG

You can put anything in a KONG, but we have a few tips and tricks to make it stick in there and not create a total mess.

1. Start with a base

A thick, creamy base like peanut butter or cream cheese is recommended to keep everything contained. You can add yummy, crunchy bites such as dry dog food or raw pet-approved vegetables from there.

2. Seal the end

If you pick something that’s a little more liquidy, like applesauce or baby food, seal the small bottom hole of the KONG so the contents don’t drip out.

3. Freeze it

One last tip: Pop it in the fridge for a few hours to make the treat last. This results in a frozen treat that creates a challenge for your pup. Which, of course, equals more “me time” for you!

Fun KONG fillings combinations canines will love

Certain combinations of foods create an irresistible delight your dog will devour. Here are our favorites:

  • Peanut butter plus dry dog food or treats – a classic combination!
  • Cream cheese plus lunch meat for a savory snack
  • Peanut butter plus apple slices or carrot sticks for an added crunch
  • Rolled-up bread with a cheese cube inside
  • A dog treat on the bottom (to block the hole) and broth filling the rest of the KONG, frozen until hard.

I’d love to hear from fellow pup parents! What do you put in your dog’s KONG? Any tips or tricks?
