10 Homemade Dog Food Recipes Every Dog Parent Should Know

Dogs are part of the family, and while you only want to feed your kids the very best foods, the same goes for our pups.

We’ve all read about the scary dog food recalls and some of the sketchy things that go into lower-grade dog foods. If you buy quality dog food, you’re fine. But it can be comforting to know exactly what is going into your dog’s food. That’s why some pup parents make their own dog food from scratch.

Making homemade dog food is also a good option for pups with chronic health issues, like diabetes or intestinal issues. It’s something to consider, too, if you have a dog who is overweight or older.

We bring our dog Toby to doggy daycare a few times a week, and the manager, a super sweet gal named Jen, feeds her two rescue pups homemade dog food every day. One of them was having major stomach issues, and a blander diet did wonders for her health. She’s like a new dog because of it.

Just a note: Before you make any big changes to your dog’s diet, always consult with their veterinarian. And keep an eye on your pup after feeding them the new food to see how they’re doing. Chances are they’ll be just fine, perhaps with even more pep in their step, but you just want to be sure.

To get you inspired, here are 10 easy and nutritious dog food recipes you can make at home right now.

About how much food should be fed to a lab sized dog? About 80 pounds.

    • Kyle Larson

Check on your bag of dog food for a measurement by weight of your dog. That should be a pretty good guide. It’s probably somewhere around 3 – 4 Cups split into two meals (1.5 – 2cups per meal)

Thanks so much for the recipes! I love the instant Pot one :)
I also mix in the supplement Azestfor to make sure my pups get all their nutrients.

  3. Kat

We’ve been making my Goldendoodles food for several years and he is Incredibly healthy. He has a beautiful coat, tremendous energy and only goes to his vet for his vaccinations. We feed him a raw diet of ground beef, rice, hard boiled eggs (with the shell on, pulverized of course) sweet potatoes, , broccoli, carrots, etc. We also use a powdered supplement from Dinovite and a liquid fish oil supplement also from Dinovite. Once a week we make 5 lbs of food–really easy, like making a GIANT meatloaf🤣🤣–and store it in the fridge. He gets fed 1-1/2 cups morning and evening.

Love your recipes. But my Shorkies weighs 2 lbs. How do I safely store these foods? Can they be frozen?

    • Mary Sherrieb

I cook for my yorkiess and freeze enough for one meal for the two of them in sandwich bags.

  8. Claudia Garcia

Ohh I want to know that too. My yorkie weighs 2.5 lbs

  9. Liz

I’m looking to add some rabbit in my 7 month old German Shepherd food. Any recipes, suggestions? Could I substitute it for another meat?

  10. Connie

Do you add supplements so your pet gets all the nutrients it needs? If so, what do you add?

  11. Sher

I freeze mine in muffin tins, pop one out, heat it in the microwave about 112 mash and then you can add anything fresh for crunch like fresh green beans chopped up.

  12. Sher

I never cook my veggies. I usually chop up raw veggies small because I have chi’s. I do once in awhile have cooked veggies without butter on them and toss them in. Raw adds crunch.
